What is the minimum I need to have at IB or TOS to short stocks? Also---do I need to have a margin acct. to do so? THX!
Yes, you need a margin account to short. I've never shorted a stock, but I've also heard there's a minimum-per-share you must have in your account when you're shorting. Tim, is that accurate?
It depends on the broker. I know that TOS requires you maintain "the greater of 100% or $2.50 per share for stock priced less than $5.00 per share" in account equity, which might be what you're talking about.
