As for SogoElite, I can say that I have never been restricted from short-selling stocks under $3, even if they were never at $3 that day or recently.

Not in my experience...don't even pay attention to what others say, just ALWAYS try to find shares to short, it costs nothing to try...got ZANE short at Sogotrade at 2.75, covered a few hours later at 2.15, still reshort at 2.05, looking good over the weekend

I'd like to add something to Tim's response that I hope you might find helpful. About a month ago, I attempted multiple times to short a stock under $3 dollars, only to receive the following message in bright red type: "NotShortblSymbol." As the trade attempts all occurred first thing in the morning and all stocks were listed on Genesis Securities' shortable stocks list (http://www.gndt.com/support/shortlist.htm), I figured something must be wrong with my account, and contacted customer service. After explaining the situation, the customer service rep. responded that stocks under $3 aren't shortable (he left the help chat before I could ask a follow up question). However, yesterday I attempted to go short on $ZANE at 2.70, and the trade executed without a problem. This could be way off, but my hunch is that stocks under $3 are shortable, as long as a) Genesis Securities has shares available, and b) the stock has traded above $3 during the trading session. Once again, I'm not completely sure, but it explains why my short sale of $ZANE was successfully executed while the others weren't. One last thing - I've read in various places that Genesis' restriction on shorting stocks under $3 doesn't apply for Sogoelite members. Perhaps someone who has used Sogoelite could answer this?

The customer service rep is misinformed, at some places they won't allow you to do it because stocks under $5 at certain firms aren't marginable. For the most part, youa re allowed to short them, but the issue with that stock at hand is that there are no shares readily available to borrow due to low float, high demand to short the stock, etc. any short sale questions you can email me.

Tim how are people using SOGOTRADE to short if the site is saying it's not possible?

I concur with wmg1041. I have Sogotrade and I was told multiple times that I cannot short stocks under $3. I kept trying anyways (as Tim kept recommending) and I was able to short ZANE at 2.85. On the other hand, I was told that SogoElite does not have the $3 limitation.

Brokers reps know little to nothing, always try and call up for shares to short, if they have them, they can help you, if not, take the day off...always remember brokers want your commissions, if there's a trade they can do, they'll find a way to do it.

I have not been able to sell any stocks on TOS.
